🎵Community Music Pavilion

De Klanksteen (The Soundstone) is a unique community music pavilion in Utrecht's Tolsteegplantsoen park that has been fostering culture and togetherness in the neighborhood since its opening on September 14, 2013. The name derives from 'fonoliet' (phonolite), a stone from which our ancestors first created music, perfectly fitting for this venue in the Tolsteeg district where streets are named after gemstones.

The striking pavilion was designed by local resident Ivan van Ouwerkerk using primary colors of De Stijl (red, yellow, blue) in combination with sleek geometric design, perfectly matching the neighborhood's strong Rietveld influences. This architectural connection to Dutch modernism makes it a distinctive cultural landmark in Utrecht-Zuid.

From late April through September, De Klanksteen organizes free monthly cultural programs on the last Sunday of each month, featuring diverse performances including music, song and dance, poetry, storytelling, and amateur theater. The venue aims to bring together young and old in the community through accessible cultural experiences.

The programming celebrates various musical styles and cultural expressions, with past events including performances inspired by the De Stijl centenary, Young Talent Days for performers under 19, and demonstrations of dance from the 1920s-1940s. Children's activities like workshops with the Central Museum and nostalgic carousels complement the musical performances, making it a true family-friendly cultural hub.

Managed by an active volunteer group (beheergroep) and supported by the Municipality of Utrecht and Friends of De Klanksteen, this community-run venue also serves as an open stage that can be used by other performers in consultation with the management group, making it a vibrant hub for local cultural expression and neighborhood connection.

Perfect for: Families seeking free cultural entertainment, community musicians and performers, neighborhood residents looking for local cultural connection, young talent under 19, poetry and storytelling enthusiasts, and anyone interested in accessible outdoor performances in a unique architectural setting.
